Thing-A-Day 28: Transmedia Talk Episode 20, Coming Soon

On this final day of Thing-A-Day, I have been so sick.  All I managed to do was line up our next episode of Transmedia Talk.  Our guest this week will be Andrea Phillips, an indie transmedia creator who will be speaking about Transmedia Ethics at DIY Days NYC this Saturday.  (BTW, DIY Days is a free event with some pretty awesome speakers and workshops.  Check out the lineup here: http://nyc.diydays.com)

We'll talk about the ethical considerations in creating immersive stories that use real world channels, and I'm planning to ask her opinion of Bonsai Kitten.  It should be a fun show.

This has been a great February.  Thanks everyone, for your things!  (And yes, that IS what she said.)

Thing-A-Day 27: TAG Logo

Went back and revisited my logo from Day 16, and scrapped everything but the lettering.

This logo for the represents convergence – both convergence of different media to give us one big experience, and convergence of artists into an organization.

The name, "Transmedia Artists Guild" becomes more specific with each word, going from the abstract "transmedia" to the concrete "guild."  That's why the lines converge as the enter the last two letters.

Also it just looks neat.  Swish!

Halfway through this, I realized I was making something similar to the Seagate logo.  I guess this is a subconscious homage (that really is a great logo.)

Thing-A-Day 26: Psychic University Courses 2

I expanded my course list to include some "flavor text" for my voice actors to read.  Probably sending scripts out to people tomorrow.  These 1-2 sentence descriptions (along with the text that will appear in the course catalog) build up a sketch of a vibrant college environment full of strange stadiums, gymnasium mishaps, snippy teachers and dangerous areas of study.

Thing-A-Day 25: Scanner Art Portrait

Portrait made by placing my HTC Hero screen down on the bed of a scanner with the camera on.  This is SO my new Facebook picture.

Thing-A-Day 24: Pre-Writing Pages

I spent the day trying to find a good pen to write R&D, and writing out a couple pages in my OReilly journal to get a feel for how long it takes to make a page and how much text I can fit on it.

I'm also using the hand-writing as an editing process.  If a phrase can be made less wordy, I will FIND a way to do that if I have to write it out in longhand.

Thing-A-Day 23: My Ph.D. in Quackery

Another thing from my transmedia book project.  This is a pocket degree from a psychic university.  Some vandal has marred it with a stamp of condemnation!

I'm not happy with the way the signatures came out.  I wrote them on paper with a ball point and then shrunk them down, but I think I will redo them with a sharpie.  Also, that's a misuse of the word "scurrilous."  Nothing comes out perfect on the first try.

Yes, this will be a thing you can buy.  Yes, it will have the QUACKERY brand on it.  It also comes with a whole back full of explanation and disclaimers, and a quick portal into the experience.  You too can become a card-carrying quack!

This school doesn't even give out wall diplomas.  They feel your credentials are more real if you can carry them around with you all the time, like a library card or one of those useless pocket calendars with a dry-cleaning ad on the back.

Thing-A-Day 22: Experia Label 2.0

I've revisited my label from Day 15 and came up with a design I really like.  I ditched the rounded shape in favor of emphasizing the teardrop-shaped hole at the top.

I also worked up a quick design for what each "flavor" will look like.  This one is "Snowboard" and features an image of an awesome bro catching some unreal air.  Just the kind of thing you'd expect from an xtreem memory drink.

Thing-A-Day 20: Wire Basket

A work in progress (and yet another piece of quackery for my quackery book).  This basket is something like a fancy giant tea strainer for your bath.  Only instead of tea, it contains rocks.  Cleansing rocks.  They cleanse.

This idea is a bastard cross between stone healing, bath salts, and images I've found all over the web for massage places.  I filled the basket with glass drops for these photos, but they're supposed to be full of river rocks.  I ran out of time to run to the dollar store and grab some.  Fun fact:  The more river rocks you have lying around, the classier you are.  Look it up.

Made from two altered sink strainers.

Thing-A-Day 20: Transmedia Talk Ep 19

I am super proud of today’s thing!  For this week’s Transmedia Talk, I got Mike Monello and Nick Braccia together to talk about transmedia approaches in the music business.  It’s a great episode, and I encourage you to give it a listen even if the word “transmedia” doesn’t ring any bells. We talk about the new 12-track YouTube song from the Flaming Lips, the Kiss coffeehouse in Myrtle Beach, and how Animal Collective misfired on a key part of the music business: storytelling.

Listen at Workbook Project

This program was a bit of a departure from our usual interview format, but I think it was one of our best shows!

I also did the exhaustive program notes for this show. Those should count as a bonus thing.  Like I said, they’re EXHAUSTIVE.

Thing-A-Day 18: The End of R&D

Today, I finished the draft of my book, Research & Development(s).  I celebrated by typing out my credit on the Dymo labeler I'm using to create the cover of the book.
